Scotland to introduce 'Wild Salmon Protection Zones'

The Scottish Government plans to establish "Wild Salmon Protection Zones" to restrict fish farming in high-risk areas for wild salmon, addressing sea lice concerns. The Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA) proposes a Sea Lice Framework, designating protection zones in salmon migration bottlenecks. In these areas, new or expanded fish farms won't be approved without demonstrating sufficient measures to prevent sea lice growth. While SEPA emphasises an evidence-based approach, Salmon Scotland expresses scepticism, advocating regulation based on fact. The framework, developed with scientific input, aims to guide sustainable fish farming, worth over £1bn ($1.3bn) to Scotland's economy. (Fish Farmer Magazine)
