Scottish salmon was the UK's top food export in 2023
Scottish salmon, the UK's top food export in 2023, reached £581m ($735m) in sales, up 5% from the previous year. France remained the primary market, while the US and Asian markets saw significant growth. Despite a decrease in export volumes, Scottish salmon outperformed other UK exports such as Cheddar cheese. Tavish Scott, CEO of Salmon Scotland, attributes the success to the nutritious, low-carbon nature of Scottish salmon and calls for government support amidst challenges including Brexit-related red tape and slow regulatory reform. The sector, employing 12,500 people, aims for sustainable growth amid economic uncertainty. (
