Seabound trials onboard carbon capture for shipping

A 240-metre container ship, the Sounion Trader, trialed an onboard carbon capture system in the Persian Gulf, aiming to reduce its climate impact. Developed by UK-based startup Seabound, the system faces challenges in space and energy supply. While capturing only a fraction of emissions initially, full-scale deployment targets up to 95% capture. Other companies including Value Maritime are pursuing similar strategies, albeit facing certification hurdles. Despite its potential, rapid advancements in cleaner fuels may render onboard carbon capture obsolete unless it achieves high capture rates at low cost, crucial for shipping's urgent decarbonisation.
