Seaweed worms to revolutionise aquaculture feed

Researchers at Aarhus University, supported by EU funding, are revolutionising aquaculture by mass-producing marine enchytraeid worms from decomposing seaweed. These worms offer ideal nutrition for juvenile fish, boosting growth rates by up to 200% and reducing mortality. They contain high protein, lipid, and omega-3 fatty acids, and can grow sustainably on industrial organic residues, reducing pressure on marine environments. Optimal production conditions and extraction procedures have been developed, showing promise for replacing traditional feed sources. While further investment and awareness are needed, EU support has been crucial in fostering innovative and sustainable changes in aquaculture. (European Commission)
