Shipping’s carbon emissions rose by 23 million tons in H1

Carbon emissions from shipping rose by 23 million tons in H1, partly due to vessels taking longer routes to avoid attacks by Houthis in the Red Sea. The 6% YoY increase meant that the industry’s emissions hit around 450 million tons, according to data from Marine Benchmark. The largest increase was from container vessels, which emitted around 15% more over the period. The new figures emphasise how difficult it will be for shipping, which carries over 80% of global trade, to fulfil the International Maritime Organization’s non-binding goal of achieving net zero greenhouse gas emissions by mid-century.
