Ships could capture carbon emissions using seawater and limestone: study

A new method proposed by Calcarea aims to capture ships' carbon dioxide emissions by using seawater and limestone. The process, which mimics natural oceanic reactions, converts CO2 into stable bicarbonate minerals. Initial tests in California showed promising results, converting 30% of diesel exhaust CO2 into bicarbonate. The system, requiring about 4% of a ship's space, is being further tested with Lomar Shipping. While it offers potential space and energy savings, environmental impacts and scalability remain concerns. Experts suggest low-emissions fuels may eventually surpass carbon capture as a preferred solution for reducing maritime emissions. (New Scientist)
