Smart Green Shipping awarded $1.3m to decarbonise activity
Smart Green Shipping (SGS) and Drax Group have secured $1.3m to advance the FastRig, a wind-assisted sail technology aimed at decarbonising the UK’s shipping sector. The funding, part of the UK’s Clean Maritime Demonstration Competition, supports sea trials on a specialist vessel, with potential fuel and emissions reductions of up to 30% on transatlantic routes. If successful, FastRig could be deployed on commercial biomass vessels, reducing emissions from Drax’s renewable energy supply chain. SGS is also developing FastRoute, an AI-powered system for optimising wind-powered routes, as part of broader efforts to drive down maritime greenhouse gas emissions. (
