# South African penguins face extinction in just over a decade

The African penguin, an endangered species, faces extinction in the wild within just over a decade. South Africa has initiated a fishing closure policy around the penguin's main breeding colonies to protect their food supply and slow population collapse. However, conservationists are concerned that the proposed closure lines don't extend far enough to secure the necessary foraging ranges for the birds. With time running out, there's a need for swift action to ensure the survival of these penguins as various threats, including competition with commercial fishing and changing ocean conditions, have led to a sharp decline in their population.
