South Korea advances in smart aquaculture for sustainable fisheries
South Korea is revolutionising its fisheries sector through the integration of advanced technologies including AI, IoT, and ICT, led by the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries under Minister Kang Do-hyung. Key initiatives include the development of AI-based platforms for designing fishing vessels and the establishment of smart aquaculture clusters with Recirculating Aquaculture Systems (RAS) to optimise farming conditions. These measures are part of a broader strategy to enhance competitiveness, efficiency, and sustainability in fisheries. Efforts extend to streamlining regulations, creating specialised seafood export zones, and improving global cold chain infrastructure. This strategic integration not only aligns with global trends towards sustainable fishery practices but also addresses challenges such as the high cost of technology and ecological impacts associated with aquaculture.
