Speeding ships threaten the endangered North Atlantic right whales

A new report reveals that critically endangered North Atlantic right whales are at risk due to ships speeding in designated "slow zones." These whales are already endangered, with only about 340 individuals remaining, and collisions with ships are a significant threat. Despite speed limits set by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, vessels, including cargo ships and luxury yachts, have been recorded traveling at more than three times the speed limit in these zones. Boat strikes and entanglement in fishing gear are leading causes of injury and fatalities among these whales. Stronger safeguards and enforcement are needed to protect this species. (The Guardian)
