Study explores nature-based approaches to managing shrimp farms
A study by Conservation International's Aquaculture and Green-Gray Infrastructure programs explores effluent treatment systems in shrimp aquaculture. It suggests that a nature-based solutions (NbS) approach can effectively manage nutrient-rich pollution while providing ecosystem benefits. Shrimp production has grown exponentially, posing environmental risks related to nutrient-rich effluent. The research compares seven treatment systems for nitrogen and phosphorus removal, finding that constructed mangrove wetlands, an NbS approach, are economically viable and offer ecosystem services. Although NbS systems require more space, Conservation International's Climate Smart Shrimp initiative aims to integrate mangrove restoration with aquaculture for sustainable outcomes. (
