Surf breaks store millions of tonnes of carbon
A groundbreaking study has revealed that forests, marshes, and mangroves near surf breaks store 88.3 million metric tonnes of "irrecoverable carbon," equivalent to the emissions of 77 million cars. This carbon, critical for climate mitigation, would be impossible to re-sequester if released by development before the 2050 net-zero deadline. The study highlights the dual benefits of protecting surf breaks, which not only safeguard biodiversity but also preserve vital carbon stocks. With nearly half of this carbon found in the US, Australia, Indonesia, Brazil, and Panama, the research underscores the urgent need for conservation efforts around these climate-crucial coastal areas.
