Tesco adopts decapod crustacean welfare policy

Tesco, one of the UK's largest supermarket chains, has introduced a comprehensive decapod crustacean welfare policy, setting strict standards for sourcing farmed shrimp. The policy, developed with the Aquatic Life Institute, includes commitments such as ending the sale of live decapod crustaceans and ensuring 100% of farmed shrimp are electrically stunned by 2026. It also mandates compliance with recognised farm assurance schemes and aims for forage fish/oil dependency ratios of less than 1 by 2030. This initiative marks a significant step in advancing animal welfare in aquaculture and is expected to influence other retailers to adopt similar policies. (The Fish Site)
