The JRC releases updated marine litter guidance

The Joint Research Centre (JRC), co-chair of the Technical Group on Marine Litter, has released an updated edition of the "Guidance on Monitoring of Marine Litter in European Seas." The publication aims to establish consistent methods for sampling, analysing, and recording marine litter, ensuring comparable data across countries. It addresses various litter types and sizes on coastlines, seafloors, and surfaces, along with organisms affected. The guidance supports EU countries in implementing the Marine Strategy Framework Directive, contributing to global efforts against marine litter. It incorporates advancements in marine research over the past decade and fosters harmonisation for improved environmental assessment and policy development. (European Commission)
