The Ocean Cleanup targets elimination of Great Pacific Garbage Patch by 2034
The Ocean Cleanup, a nonprofit environmental organisation, has announced plans to completely remove the Great Pacific Garbage Patch by 2034, estimating the cost at $7.5bn. The patch, containing 79,000 tonnes of plastic, is roughly twice the size of Texas. The organisation, led by CEO Boyan Slat, has developed technologies such as the System 03 floating barrier to fish out waste. So far, they've removed one million pounds of trash—just 0.5% of the total. Slat also claims they could potentially clear the patch in just five years for $4bn if the organisation rapidly raises capital and expands its operations. The main hurdle remains securing the necessary financial support. (
