How to make shipping more sustainable: opinion
The Navigating the Future report advocates the 2030 Shipping Pact For People and Nature (2030 SPPaN) to combat shipping's triple threats: pollution, climate change, and biodiversity loss. Shipping, responsible for 3% of global greenhouse gas emissions, necessitates urgent sustainable practices. The IMO's decarbonisation targets align with climate action, but implementing equitable solutions poses challenges. International regulations such as the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity and Marine Biodiversity in Areas Beyond National Jurisdiction are critical, and the 2030 SPPaN addresses justice, equity, and sustainability. The initiative's goals include speed restrictions, emission control areas, marine protection, improved ship efficiency, and pollution eradication. Monitoring, regulations, stakeholders, and partnerships are vital for accountability and progress toward a sustainable shipping future. (
