Transforming Caribbean sargassum from nuisance to nutrient

Since 2011, sargassum seaweed has annually inundated Caribbean beaches, detrimentally impacting tourism. Local entrepreneurs, recognising its potential, have pioneered converting this nuisance into valuable agricultural products such as biofertilisers and biostimulants. Joshua Forte of Red Diamond Compost exemplifies this innovative approach by incorporating sargassum into products that enhance soil productivity and reduce reliance on synthetic fertilisers. Despite challenges with inconsistent availability and potential heavy metal content, this emerging industry leverages sargassum's nutrient-rich composition to improve agricultural yields, offering economic and environmental benefits to the region.  (Mongabay)
