Two retired Washington State Ferries vessels sold for recycling in Ecuador
Washington State Ferries (WSF) has sold two retired vessels, the Elwha and Klahowya, to Nelson Armas of Ecuador for $100,000 each. The ferries, both over 50 years old, will be towed to Ecuador for recycling at a clean, green steel mill facility, ensuring environmentally responsible disposal. The sale helps WSF free up docking space and reduce maintenance costs. Elwha, a 144-car Super-class ferry, primarily served the Anacortes/Friday Harbor route, while the 87-car Klahowya operated on the Fauntleroy/Vashon/Southworth route. The ferries will begin their final journey from Bainbridge Island on 19 August. (
