UK issues first carbon capture and storage licences
The North Sea Transition Authority has issued 21 carbon capture and storage licenses to 14 companies, marking the UK's first carbon storage licensing round. These licenses cover oil and gas reservoirs and saline aquifers in the North Sea and East Irish Sea, with the potential to store up to 30 million tonnes of CO2 per year by 2030, equivalent to 10% of the UK's annual emissions. Shell, Perenco, and Eni were awarded licenses off the Norfolk coast, part of the proposed Bacton Energy Hub, aiming to provide low-carbon energy and support the UK's net-zero emissions goals. (
