UK launches £4.6m fund for sustainable aquaculture ventures

The UK’s Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC) has launched a £4.6m ($5.85m) fund to support sustainable aquaculture projects from academia and industry. The fund will back 10 initiatives, including AI-powered imaging for plankton health, novel seaweed culturing strategies for bioplastics, and genetic improvement of Atlantic salmon through speed breeding and gene editing. Industry partners will contribute an additional 10% cash investment. Dr. Lee Beniston of BBSRC highlighted the potential of these innovations to enhance food security and public health. (UKTN)
