UK renewables generated enough energy to power all the country's homes in 2023

Renewables in the UK generated over 90 terawatt-hours (TWh) of energy in 2023, exceeding the power needs of all 28 million homes in the country, according to an analysis by the Energy and Climate Intelligence Unit (ECIU). Generating the same amount of power using gas stations would have required more than 180 TWh of gas. Renewable electricity generation, including wind, hydro, and solar, increased by over 10% in 2023 compared to 2019, while gas generation declined by around a quarter. The UK aims to decarbonise its entire electricity system by 2035 as part of its net-zero carbon target by 2050. (Engineering and Technology)
