The UK's first large-scale mine water heat network, operating in Gateshead, has achieved success, with the Coal Authority declaring it a viable project. The system utilises water-filled disused coal mines 150m underground to extract geothermal energy, providing low-carbon heat and replacing conventional boiler systems. The network, funded by Gateshead Council and the Heat Networks Investment Project, serves 350 high-rise homes, educational institutions, cultural centres, and office buildings. The project is expected to save 72,000 tonnes of CO2 over 40 years, representing a significant step in decarbonising heat and showcasing the potential for similar initiatives in former mining communities across the UK.
