University of Glasgow secures £3m for sustainable aquaculture research
The University of Glasgow has received £3m ($3.8m) in funding for four projects focused on sustainable aquaculture, specifically in farmed salmon and seaweed. Led by researchers Martin Llewellyn and Sofie Spatharis, the projects will explore plankton-based drivers of gill disease in salmon, biofouling in seaweed farming, and other innovative methods to enhance aquaculture. The funding, from the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC), includes collaborations with the University of Aberdeen, Roslin Institute, and industry partners like MOWI and Scottish Sea Farms. The projects aim to advance sustainable practices in the expanding aquaculture industry. (
