US to invest $36m in mCDR research and development
The Biden administration is investing $36m in research and development (R&D) for marine carbon dioxide removal (mCDR). The Department of Energy (DOE) is backing a portfolio of sensor systems and computer modelling programs to measure the efficacy of ocean CO2 removal technologies in real-world scenarios. mCDR involves large-scale interventions to alter the earth's temperature, using methods like seaweed cultivation, CO2 extraction, and alkalinity enhancement to capture gigatonnes of dissolved carbon in the ocean and sequester it elsewhere. The DOE funding will support 11 projects in computer modelling and sensor technology to evaluate and measure the performance of various mCDR technologies. (
