World’s first autonomous solar-powered ferry concludes trials

The MF Estelle, the world’s first remotely operated electric ferry, has successfully completed trials in Stockholm, demonstrating the potential for sustainable, autonomous maritime transport. Built by Norway’s Brødrene Aa, the 12-metre catamaran operates on solar-powered electricity and features advanced navigation systems, including AI and GPS. Controlled from Trondheim, 600 km away, the trial showcased its ability to traverse Stockholm’s waterways autonomously. Developed by Zeabuz and Torghatten, the ferry is part of Stockholm’s push for zero-emission water transport. Future plans include enabling two-way communication via 5G and scaling the technology for broader applications in urban waterway mobility worldwide. (Offshore Energy
